Message by Professor Göran Bexell, Chairperson of the Board
January 2010
The Foundation’s Board and Secretariat look back on an intensive period of hard work. The recent processes reconfirmed the institution’s commitments in line with its United Nations related mission to contribute to better North-South relations and also cultivated further interaction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the current main funder of our activities. We are now looking forward to meeting the new challenges related to issues of global governance and human security, development, democracy and human rights. The mission of the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation is more relevant than ever.
In the spirit of Dag Hammarskjöld as the second Secretary General we will continue to make the values and work of the United Nations still more effective and attractive. Today’s world is more and more dominated by the superpowers – the USA and China – while the EU is trying to find its role. In this new situation the legacy of Hammarskjöld is inspiring; not least in his conviction that the UN should be the forum and voice for all nations and sometimes challenge the superpowers. The situation before, during and after the Copenhagen meeting in December shows the dire need for effective and democratic global governance.
With seminars, lectures and other forms of dialogue, through publications and extended collaboration with members in our network and other cooperating individuals and institutional partners, we will continue to fulfill our mission. This mission is global and we are working with people all over the world. The Secretariat is based at the wonderful, historical Geijersgården in Uppsala and we invite you to contact us there via our email address: .
