This year’s lecture was given by Jan Eliasson, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, and former President of the UN General Assembly. The title of the lecture is Peace, Development and Human Rights: The Indispensable Connection.
Ambassador Eliasson’s lecture departs from The UN General Assembly statement in 2005 that Peace, Development and Human Rights are the three pillars on which to base international action. He points to their intrinsic relations. Eliasson also brings out how Hammarskjöld’s appreciation of nature and culture formed an organic link to diplomacy and international action.

The lecture takes place exactly on the day 50 years after Hammarskjöld’s death in a plane crash in Ndola, present-day Zambia, on a mission to restore peace to Congo.
The Annual Dag Hammarskjöld Lecture is co-organised by Uppsala University and the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation. The lecture is free and includes a performance by Allmänna sången. The lecture will be filmed and available here on this webpage next week.
