Burma in humanitarian and political crisis

 Just a week before the Burmese regime was to hold a national referendum on a new constitution, the country was hit by the cyclone Nargis on Saturday 3 May. More than one million people are believed to be homeless, and more than 100,000 could have been killed. Although the international community reacted quickly and offered emergency aid in large quantities, most of the victims have not received any aid because of restrictions by the regime. Every day of delay is likely to cost thousands of lives. Nevertheless the military regime refuses to let foreign aid workers into the country and goes along with the planned referendum, which had already been highly criticized by the international community and the Burmese opposition groups.
Matilda Hald, coordinator of the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation's Burma project, was recently in Burma and follows the situation closely. In this seminar, she will discuss the sham referendum in the wake of a natural disaster and possibilities for political change in Burma.
