Media and Democracy in Southern Africa
Public seminar with:
Marika Griehsel, journalist (Stockholm)
Prof. Maxi Schoeman, University of Pretoria
Amin Kamete, Nordic Africa Institute, Uppsala
Henning Melber, Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation

3 May marks the annual World Press Freedom Day, which pays tributeto the role of independent media, journalists and their contribution to democracy and human rights. This year, UNESCO arranges for a two-day seminar in Doha, which addresses the role that media can play in intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding by eradicating hate speech, ignorance and prejudices. The importance of high ethical standards for journalists, in particular during a conflict, will also be at the heart of the dialogue.
The Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation has recently as a result of its newly established Ernst Michanek Media and Development Event Series been involved in the publication of a PhD study on Women Journalists in Namibia’s Liberation Struggle 1985-1990 (Basel: Basler Afrika Bibliographien 2008), which will also be presented. This conversation is the second event in the series. Participants will relate to the experiences in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe and the role of the media especially during politically contested times.
The conversation will end with a social mingling.
Time: 17-19 hrs
Venue: Övre Slottsgatan 2, Uppsala
