Care of people and care of the environment:
What mainstream economics has neglected
Lecture by: Prof. Maria Floro
The world faces serious challenges that go beyond the current economic and financial crisis. These include the crises of social reproduction and of environmental destruction. Both are critical issues that mainstream economics have failed to address or ignored far too long. Dominant macroeconomic policies and development strategies continue to neglect their impact on social reproduction and the environment. The result is a growing tension between the pursuit of economic growth and the expansion of material consumption on the one hand and the ability of society to meet subsistence needs, care of children, the sick and the elderly as well as the maintenance and care of the environment on the other.
Drawing from the contributions of feminist economics and ecological economics, the presentation explores the interconnection between the growing crisis of social reproduction and the deepening ecological crisis. After examining several of the essential contradictions, it finally presents an alternative framework for developing gender sensitive and environmentally aware economic policies.
Maria Floro is Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the American University, Washington DC. She is currently a scholar in residence at the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation.
